BreakOut West took over Saskatoon in September and now NSMZ is taking a look back at the highlights and moments that made it memorable.

As both a performer and participant, NSMZ correspondent Matt Stinn experienced BreakOut West 2024 firsthand. Held in Saskatoon during the last weekend of September, the conference took over the city's venues, streets, and conversations with a vibrant energy that lingers even now, weeks later. From industry insights to unforgettable performances, Matt reflects on the experience of this renowned Canadian music showcase in the heart of Saskatchewan.

The second last weekend of September is typically a quiet time in Saskatoon. Kids are settled into school routines, leaves are starting to change, and the inevitable autumn-based advertisements are just beginning. Enter BreakOut West: a Canadian music conference that brings with it some of Canada’s best up-and-coming acts, along with some standout international talent.

Josh Bravener & The Hypochondriacs (NB), Nico Paulo (NL), Maggie Andrew (NS), Billie Zizi (AB), Vikki Minor (SK) - Black Cat Tavern

BOW took root at the Sheraton Cavalier to showcase Saskatoon's picturesque riverfront while also providing space and amenities for dozens of informative sessions. Panels and interactive meetings covered topics from licensing and royalties to international touring, management contracts, and even vocal health. For attendees, BOW offered a fantastic opportunity to expand their knowledge and feel more empowered in their careers.

When the meet-and-greets and information sessions wrapped each day, BOW’s industry delegates and attendees descended upon Saskatoon’s Broadway district like a hungry mob, eager to catch the next "it" band. Showcases ran simultaneously across six to nine venues, each band playing a half-hour set. The resulting culture of excitement was unmistakable, with groups of people darting in and out of venues all night long. The final night overlapped with Nuit Blanche, making Broadway buzz with culture and energy. Some standout acts I personally got to see were Calgary’s St. Arnaud (think Supertramp meets a roots band), Mali Haf (an incredible experiential-pop Welsh performer), and Alex MacNeil (a charming rock-and-roll troubadour from the Yukon).

Dempsey Bolton (AB), Velavox (BC), HAVS (MB), DJ Rain and TEFRONDON, Boogey the Beat (MB) with Eekwol and T-Rhyme - Amigos Cantina

As if a world-class conference and festival weren’t enough, the Western Canadian Music Awards coincided with BOW. With categories honoring all facets of our vibrant Canadian industry, Saskatoon’s own Amigo’s Cantina received the Kevin Walters Industry Builder Award.

All in all, attending BOW in my home city and witnessing the way it animated our community was a total pleasure. I’m already looking forward to next year’s conference, festival, and awards in Winnipeg!
