Rose Cousins’ new album Conditions of Love: Vol. 1 is something truly special. It’s thoughtful, emotional, and beautifully crafted—full of reflections on love, grief, hope, and everything in between. A lot of it was shaped by the pandemic and major life shifts, including Cousins purchasing her first “real” piano, which fans got a peek at during the album’s successful Kickstarter campaign (#kickrose). The album feels like a companion to 2020’s Bravado (also crowdfunded), but more grounded, more personal. You can really feel the evolution in both sound and message. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if this one lands her a Juno or even a Polaris nomination.
The soundscape of COL Vol. 1 is full of what I’d call “cautious optimism”—there’s a sense of fragility to the hope in these songs. It explores love from all angles: beginning to end, birth to death, joy to heartbreak. Cousins doesn’t shy away from the emotional heaviness, but she delivers it with such grace that the album never feels weighed down. Instead, it feels lived-in, honest, and ultimately comforting. The cynical optimism within Cousins’ soundscape weaves a vivid tapestry—one threaded with vulnerability, clarity, and emotional depth.
The night opened with Wyatt C. Louis, and their set was absolutely beautiful. They’ve got this soulful, textured sound that blends genres effortlessly. Louis, a Plains Cree singer-songwriter originally from Treaty 6 territory and now based in Moh’kinsstis (Calgary), let their roots shine through in every song. Their debut album Chandler, mostly written during the lockdowns, is already making waves—including a Juno nomination for Best Album Artwork.

One standout was the track “Oh Vibrant Sky,” a love letter to summer music festivals and the healing energy they bring. It’s about the joy of community, the emotional reset that comes from being surrounded by people who just get it. You could feel the heart behind it—it’s reflective, personal, and full of warmth.
When Rose Cousins took the stage, she brought a presence that filled the room from the first note. Her voice has that smooth, familiar quality that makes you feel like you're being sung to by an old friend. One of the most powerful moments came with the track “K’s Waltz,” written on the first anniversary of the death of her close friend Koady Chaisson, a founding member of The East Pointers. His sudden passing from an aortic aneurysm hit hard, and you can hear that in every line. The song is full of grief and reverence, but also a sense of legacy—of carrying forward the kindness and energy Koady was known for, like his cold water swim fundraisers for the Unison Fund. It’s a song that lingers.
Also, quick shout out—Rose Cousins knows how to rock a custom suit. Kristen Stewart might have some competition in that department.
All in all, it was a night of deep emotions, gorgeous music, and connection. Both Cousins and Louis brought vulnerability and authenticity to the stage in a way that left a lasting impression. Conditions of Love: Vol. 1 is a must-listen, especially if you're in a space where you need music that helps you feel seen, held, and maybe even a little more whole.
