Our Grade: B+
Taya Lebel makes a confident first impression with her debut single, an upbeat and romantic track entitled "Life We're Livin'" (released this past September) that captures the rush of early love while keeping one eye firmly on the future. Inspired by shared memories with her boyfriend, the song leans into the glow of young summer romance - full of motion, optimism, and the promise of adventures still to come. Honestly, this track could easily end up being the wedding walk off song of many happy couples in Saskatchewan and beyond. Recorded at OLDSCHOOL Recordings in Saskatoon with producer Andon Schumack, the track balances polish with an easygoing warmth that suits its nostalgic tone.
Vocal tracking and harmonies were recorded with assistance from Simon Jasieniuk (Beezneez Recording), known for his work with Katelyn Lehner, who also contributed to the vocal harmony composition. Lebel’s vocal performance is strongest when she leans into her upper register, where the melody opens up and the emotional weight of the song really lands. Her use of vocal scoops adds character early on, though their frequent return flirts with familiarity as the track unfolds. At times, the vocals could benefit from a touch more clarity, both in Lebel's diction and the overall crispness of the Schumack/Jasieniuk recording of them. Still, the delivery remains engaging, particularly in a standout bridge that feels assured and professional.
Instrumentally, the song shines. The banjo in the intro and outro adds a lively, roots-driven texture, while the guitar work - likely Schumack’s - brings a surprising edge, with a solo that carries a subtle classic-rock sheen without ever overpowering the track. Overall, it’s a fun, sentimental debut that highlights Lebel’s natural charm as a vocalist and songwriter, and sets a strong foundation for what comes next.
